Types of Tattoos
There are many different types of tattoos, so it’s important for you to know the differences so that you can communicate your idea to your tattoo artist.
The outline below may help you learn more about the different types of tattoos:
Abstraction Tattoos
These are mostly archaic styles of tattoos and do not involve a large amount of custom artwork. They’re usually done in various shades of black or classic gray. A common place for an abstraction tattoo is around the naval, chest, calves, etc. Tribal and Celtic tattoos are examples of abstraction tattoos.
Naturalistic Tattoos
These are an attempt to portray realistic images in your tattoo. They involve specific details, shading and perspective techniques, and are done in a way that is as close as possible to the real life version of what your tattooing. The cost of these is a bit higher due to the intense detail, but naturalistic tattoos add that extra spark to your tattoo artwork.
Dedication Tattoos
These tattoos, also known as pledges, can sometimes involve the use of sailor-based designs, such as the heart with a name banner, although this is not as popular in current times. They can also involve military regiments. These tattoos generally have a reasonable price, as they’re rather simple and straight forward to create.
Simplification Tattoos
These do not have any boundaries in terms of how they’re designed. Any shape or size can be included in this type of tattoo. The range of designs is wide for simplification designs, including animals, flowers, and others.
Complex TattoosThese designs, as noted in their name, are much more intricate in nature than the other types of tattoos. They can sometimes be a mix of various tattoos and are usually much more impressive than other types of designs. View a few of the tattoos we’ve created on our

How to Choose a Tattoo DesignIf you’re considering getting a tattoo, you may be having trouble deciding exactly what type of design what you want for your Tattoo. Below are a few things to think about when considering a new tattoo design, especially for your first tattoo.
Consider why you want to get a tattoo in the first place: is it to honor someone, just for fun, etc.
Start thinking of what type of things have meaning to you: what hobbies do you enjoy, what aspects of your life have changed your perspective on life, etc.
If you want to honor someone with your tattoo, think about what types of things they liked to do or hobbies they had. What had meaning to them?
Google around or look through the Timeless Ink Gallery to get ideas for your tattoo from other tattoos that have already been done. You don’t have to have an exact copy obviously…but having something visual to start from helps you get your ideas together.
Be creative: you can sketch out your own ideas or sit down with a tattoo artist who can take your words and turn them into tattoo designs for you to choose from. This is a great way to help you materialize your vision.
Remember that your tattoo stays with you forever. You need to be comfortable with the design you’re choosing and work with a professional designer to make sure that it’s exactly what you want.
